The Journey Begins
I embarked on a trip to Australia with a friend, eager for adventure. We booked a compact automatic car for a one-way rental from Sydney to Brisbane. Sixt confirmed our rental as a BYD Atto 3 SUV, but failed to mention it was an electric vehicle.
The Struggles with Charging
Upon arrival, I was horrified to learn about the electric nature of the car. I desperately attempted to swap it for a petrol car, but Sixt refused my request. To make matters worse, I couldn't find another company willing to take the one-way booking on such short notice. Despite assurances from Sixt that charging stations were readily available, we soon faced endless struggles:
- Searching for chargers
- Battling account setups
- Wasting hours trying to power the car
- Worrying about the car's range
The Breaking Point
Our troubles escalated in Ballina, located 115 miles south of Brisbane, where the EV became immobilised and unlockable at a petrol station. This incident left us stranded and frustrated, highlighting the challenges of navigating the remote areas of Australia with an electric vehicle that lacked adequate support and information.
