In the heart of Western Australia's remote Ngaanyatjarra Lands, a new farm initiative is transforming lives by providing both employment opportunities and a steady supply of fresh produce. Helmut Cooke, a local resident, is actively involved in nurturing crops like pineapples, silverbeet, lettuces, carrots, and potatoes. He expresses his satisfaction, stating, "This farm has everything. It's good to come work here."

The farm, located near the small community of Wanarn, is part of a broader effort to address employment challenges in remote Australian areas. The Albanese government has initiated the Remote Jobs and Economic Development Program (RJEP), which aims to create 3,000 jobs in remote communities within three years. This program is currently being trialed in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands, focusing on jobs that meet local needs.

Mr. Cooke and fellow community members have worked diligently to transform a dilapidated shed into a flourishing garden, creating three jobs in horticulture. According to Shannon Inder, the communities manager, the garden's fertile soil allows for easy growth of various crops. He noted, "If you just add water to it, anything will grow."

Challenges and Opportunities in Remote Employment

The RJEP replaces the Community Development Program (CDP), which was criticized for its inability to reduce unemployment effectively. Under the new program, participants will not face penalties for failing to report, thus allowing them to work under conditions that suit their lifestyles, especially in relation to cultural obligations.

Despite skepticism from some community members about the effectiveness of the new program, many feel that communication between program operators and participants has improved, fostering a sense of community engagement and collaboration.

Future of the Farm

Plans are underway to expand the Wanarn farm, which recently received a $5.2 million grant for water infrastructure and development. This expansion is expected to enhance food security and health benefits for the local population.

As the farm grows, residents are excited about the prospect of enjoying local produce. Mr. Cooke shares his enthusiasm, stating, "The community says 'palya' [thank you]." This initiative not only aims to provide fresh food but also to foster a stronger, healthier community in the outback.
