Telstra and Starlink Collaboration

Telstra, Australia’s largest telecommunications company, has announced an exciting partnership with SpaceX's Starlink to introduce satellite-to-mobile text messaging for its customers. This collaboration aims to enhance coverage across Australia, particularly benefiting those in regional and remote areas.

The initial phase will focus on testing and refining the satellite-to-mobile messaging service tailored for Australian conditions, paving the way for a commercial launch. Currently, Telstra's mobile network covers 99.7% of the Australian population over 3 million square kilometers. However, due to Australia's vast landmass, there are still significant areas lacking mobile and fixed network coverage. This is where Telstra envisions satellite technology to play a crucial role, complementing its existing infrastructure.

“We will continue this investment to improve our terrestrial mobile network, while exploring how satellite technology can play a role in remote areas of the country not covered by land-based coverage,” stated Telstra.

This partnership is not Telstra's first endeavor with Starlink; it builds on their ongoing collaboration regarding LEO satellite home and small business fixed internet products, which was announced last year.

Starlink has been actively expanding its partnerships with various mobile network operators globally, including a recent deal with Kyivstar in Ukraine for similar services.
