As countless Australians and overseas travellers prepare for their road trips ahead of the Christmas break, authorities are cautioning drivers on the importance of remaining alert on long-distance, monotonous journeys in the bush.

Shocking Footage of a Horrific Crash

This week, shocking footage surfaced of a horrific crash along a barren outback highway, showing a badly smashed-up Toyota 4WD flipped on its side with belongings strewn across the side of the road. Travel blogger Grant Barnes shared the scene on social media, emphasizing how quickly tiredness can catch up with drivers.

"This is exactly what you have to watch out for," Barnes noted, highlighting the dangers of long drives.

Expert Insights on Road Safety

Dr. Ingrid Johnston, CEO of the Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS), explained that holiday travel often involves longer journeys, unfamiliar roads, and busier traffic conditions, which increase the risk of crashes.

"Tragically, the holiday season is associated with a spike in road fatalities and serious injuries," she stated, pointing out that fatigue, distraction, and alcohol remain leading contributors to road trauma in Australia.

The Dangers of Distraction

Johnston highlighted that driver distraction is a growing concern, with evidence suggesting it contributes to a substantial proportion of road crashes. The increased use of mobile phones and in-vehicle technologies is a major factor driving this rise in distraction.

Tips for Staying Safe on the Road

To help drivers stay safe, the ACRS recommends:

  1. Plan Rest Breaks: Schedule breaks at least every two hours.
  2. Avoid Driving When Tired: Align travel plans with natural sleep cycles.
  3. Get Adequate Sleep: Ensure 7-8 hours of quality sleep before a trip.
  4. Share Driving Duties: Share the driving with others.
  5. Recognise Warning Signs of Fatigue: Pull over if you notice signs like yawning or difficulty concentrating.
  6. Use Safe Alternatives: Avoid relying on caffeine or music as substitutes for rest.

Engaging in Safe Cognitive Tasks

Associate Professor Paul Roberts from the Western Australian Centre for Road Safety Research suggests engaging in safe cognitive tasks while driving on monotonous roads to maintain alertness. Trivia games can be a fun way to stay engaged during long trips.
