Introduction

The Albanese Labor Government has launched a groundbreaking initiative with the Remote Jobs and Economic Development (RJED) program, providing $707 million in grants aimed at creating up to 3,000 jobs in remote Australia over the next three years.

Job Creation and Support

This program is designed to generate essential jobs in remote areas, ensuring real pay, decent conditions, superannuation, and leave entitlements for employees. Eligible employers in these regions can now apply for grants to hire local job seekers, thereby fostering meaningful employment opportunities.

Funding for Employers

Employers can also access funding for equipment, infrastructure, and other costs associated with job creation. This may include expenses for uniforms, on-the-job training, insurance, and operating costs.

Community-Centric Approach

The RJED program focuses on building sustainable job markets that align with community needs. It emphasizes flexibility, fairness, and the long-term success of both employees and their communities. Developed in consultation with the First Nations Reference Group, this initiative has been tested through community consultations and job trials in over 300 communities nationwide.

Success Stories

  • Taneeka Palmer, a Bwgcolman woman from Palm Island, expresses confidence in her role as a community service worker, highlighting the support she's received and her passion for community development.
  • Patrick Harry, a Warmun man from East Kimberley, shares how his new job in farm and livestock roles at Glen Hill Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation has rebuilt his confidence and provided for his family.
  • Richard Lennon-Lawrie, a Mirning man, thrives as a full-time ranger with Far West Coast Investments, enjoying the responsibilities that come with full-time work.
  • Joseph Shannon, a Warlpiri man, finds joy in his casual role at Winanjjikari Music Centre, where he can pursue his passion for music.

These stories illustrate how funding the right jobs in the right locations can restore dignity in work.

Grant Application Timeline

The first round of grants is now open and will run until February, with a second round to follow. The RJED program marks the initial phase of replacing the Community Development Program (CDP), paving the way for a new remote employment service to assist job seekers in becoming job-ready with necessary skills and resources.
